Disposing of unwanted items.

Reducing the volume and number of your possessions is not always easy. Here are a few hints and tips that hopefully will be helpful.

Unwanted items tend to fall into 3 categories:

1) Definite rubbish. With this you can:

Take this to your local tip in your car or:

Hire a skip or:

Phone a RUBBISH REMOVAL COMPANY. See local free newspapers (Globe and News) for current operators.

2) Some obvious value to items but you don't want items.

Do family and friends want them? It can be nice to see items go to a new home but beware! There are many pitfalls if you choose to do this. It can often cause you a lot of work organising transport and collections, waiting in for people to collect who do not come, putting peoples noses out of joint because they were not offered items etc!!

Take to local charity shops such as OXFAM.

Phone/Contact Auction Room (ie. Cato Cranes on 0151 709 5559)

Visit local 2nd hand shops and see if any value in the items.

3) Recycle items. Typical ways to do this are:

It is now much easier to recycle items as there are banks at more and more locations for more and more types of items. Take a look at www.recycle-more.co.uk for a list of local banks and other relevant information.

Charity shops (already mentioned) are really a way to recycle goods, too.

Some charities take old but decent conditioned furniture. Try www.frn.org.uk to get the local furniture reuser.

Choosing the correct way of disposing of items.........

It is not always easy to know if items have any sale value. Probably the best way is to phone an Auction house and ask for their advice.(see www.localeyes.co.uk for a list). Before you phone or email them, write a list of items you might want to sell, with notes about the items. Many items have date of manufacture on them and the name of the maker. Make a note of the condition, as this often significantly affects the price. The Auction House may send out an Assessor if it thinks you have enough saleable items to make it worthwhile.

We have always found www.cato-crane.co.uk johncraneto be an excellent company to deal with. The irrepressible Auctioneer, John Crane, pretty well works 24/7/365, managing not only to run the weekly auctions (ably helped by Nick Bray) but also features frequently in the Daily Post, on BBC TV (Flog-it) and joins up with the equally irrepressible Billy Butler on BBC Radio Merseyside for a live phone in valuation program. John and Billy banter enjoyably with callers hoping to find they have found an heirloom in the house. The show is on a Tuesday afternoon from 3.00-3.30pm. Definitelly worth a listen ..or even worth a call if you have something you think might be valuable and interesting. The specialist advice is top-knotch! But don't hang your hat on the soccer chat!
