Bulky Waste

Are you replacing your old sofa, fridge-freezer, small electrical item or other furniture?  Is it still in good condition or working order?  If so, it could be sent to another good home rather than landfill.

If you think your old furniture or electrical item is in good condition please consider re-use. Wirral-based charities will accept donations of unwanted furniture in good condition for refurbishment and re-sale in their shops.

Wirral Independent Recycling Enterprise (WIRE) (currently awaiting Charity Status)

Tel: 0151 638 669

www.wire-ltd.com/

Collects pre-loved furniture in good condition.

British Heart Foundation (reg Charity No. 225971)

Tel: 0844 499 4173 or 0207 998 5500 to be connected to your local store.

Collects electrical goods in working order and good quality used furniture.

Or, why not advertise your items on Freecycle?

Freecycle is easy to use and free!  The Wirral branch of Freecycle has 5626 active members already and is growing every day.  It's a non-profit movement of people who are giving (and getting) stuff for free in their own areas – thus keeping good items out of landfill.  Visit their website at www.freecycle.org.uk

Duty of care

You may also consider using one of the many “man and a van” type services that frequently advertise in local papers and telephone service directories.  Please note that you have a duty to ensure that whoever takes your waste is required to have the necessary authority to transport and dispose of waste.

Always ask where the waste will be taken for disposal and obtain a written receipt. If you do not take reasonable precautions and your waste is subsequently discovered fly tipped you could be prosecuted and fined for failing in your duty of care.

Household Waste Recycling Centre

Items can also be taken free of charge to your local Household Waste Recycling Centre. Visit the Merseyside Waste Disposal Authority for details of your nearest Household Waste Recycling Centre. All Wirral sites accept furniture and electrical items.

ERIC Collections

If your items are not suitable for reuse you may wish to arrange a bulky waste collection.

Wirral Council will come and collect your bulky items for a charge of £20 per visit (conditions apply), for up to 6 separate items.  Collections will be made within 10 working days.

Please Note: It is recommended that when paying by debit/credit card that you telephone Streetscene direct on 0151 606 2004 when requesting this service as a Customer Service Advisor will be able to arrange a suitable collection date for you as well as taking your payment ensuring a much quicker and efficient service.

Alternatively you can visit a Council One Stop Shop. Please note that payment by cash can only be taken at the Birkenhead One Stop Shop, however payment by debit/credit card or cheque is accepted at all One Stop Shops.

The Service is available to residents of Wirral for household waste only.

• Streetscene will advise whether your items are classed as 'Furniture' or 'White Goods'

• All items to be collected must be specified e.g. Table & 4 Chairs, or bed-base, mattress & chair

• Items to be collected must be left outside your home (in the case of flats this must be on the ground floor), by 7am on the day of collection. (Collections will take place between 7am and 4pm - unfortunately it is not possible to specify a particular time).
